A strong voice for industry skills needs

I'm pleased to introduce the October newsletter for the Ai Group Centre for Education and Training, my first as Executive Director.

I joined CET and Ai Group earlier this year as I truly believe in the value that skills bring to people, industry, our economy and society. I’m excited about the opportunity to bring my skills and experience to the role. I would also like to personally acknowledge the leadership and support of Megan Lilly.

I'm happy to share that there is a lot of great new work from the CET team to look out for over the coming months.

First up, the Centre has launched its new look website, where you can access all the latest reports, submissions, webinars and blogs produced by the team in the Centre.

To access the website, visit cet.aigroup.com.au. Ai Group members can sign up to be part of the Centre's Member Forum and for non-Ai Group members, you may want to consider joining our Centre Network.

In a policy sense, important work continues. Look out for an upcoming paper on foundation skills, incorporating research on the impacts of low levels of literacy and numeracy in the workplace.

We also have a foundation skills focused webinar on 23 October as part of our thought-starter series. Information about how to sign up is available later in this newsletter. I hope you'll join us then!

National Skills Plan released

Australia has its first National Skills Plan. Released in late September, the plan outlines Skills Ministers' vision for the national vocational education and training system. It follows last year's National Skills Agreement, which saw the commitment of an additional $3.7 billion invested into the VET system over five years by the commonwealth, state and territory governments.

VET Workforce Blueprint released

The federal and state governments have announced a new vocational education and training workforce blueprint, which is designed to address some of the longstanding challenges faced by the VET sector, industry and businesses around the quality and availability of the teacher, trainer and assessor workforce.

Inquiry into use of generative AI in Australian education system report

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment Education and Training has released its report from the inquiry into the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the Australian education system. The report, entitled Study Buddy or Influencer, notes the Australian Government has a framework to encourage schools to use GenAI, and more universities are also integrating GenAI.

OECD Education at a Glance 2024 – Australia

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released its Education at a Glance 2024 report. The annual series of reports looks at educational attainment, access and equity measures across a range of developed countries, and charts their progress over time.

Apprenticeship completion rates remain low

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research has released its latest data about apprenticeship and traineeship completion rates. It shows that overall completion rates decreased in 2023. Completions is one of the issues being considered as part of the Commonwealth Government Strategic Review of the Apprenticeship Incentive Scheme.

training.gov.au website makeover

The national Training Register, training.gov.au, is being enhanced by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. This is the website that contains details of all training packages, qualifications, competency standards and Registered Training Organisations.

The enhancements are designed to improve usability, including search functions. A Beta site has been developed and is now available for users to review and provide feedback. You can also sign up to receive invitations to go-live showcases.

TAFE Centres of Excellence are rolling out across the country after being included as a flagship model under the 2023 National Skills Agreement. Each will focus on an industry sector and will become a national network for that sector, working with partners from industry, universities and the community. In this webinar, our expert guest presenters explored the concept, how industry can benefit, and how industry and our member companies will be able to connect with the Centres.
